I'm posting this from my kindle, testing it as a computing platform, thinking not to bring a real computer. It's better than the phone because it is larger, but the O/S stinks. I read on the net about hacking your kindle to be regular android, but somehow I doubt I'm going to bother.

Chaos is erupting; we learned that the town of Madras, where we thought to view the eclipse, is expecting 100,000 visitors. We think maybe we should not be part of that. Unfortunately, we made a tactical error in choosing a nice rental house an hours drive from centerline, outside of totality, rather than a crummy motel inside totality. If we were anywhere inside, we could give up on centerline and just walk. However, we will have to drive, somewhere. We are thinking to go a little further east and then go as far north as traffic will allow, and in any case, to get up way early to do it. Cross our fingers that it will work!

My sister lives not far from Portland. The whole state of Oregon seems to be expecting the Eclipse apocalypse, so they have decided to just hope that it will be clear in their back yard, rather than try to drive anywhere.

Lots of rumors about really horrendous traffic in Central Oregon for the eclipse. I've heard predictions of 4 hour drive time between Bend & Redmond -- and that only takes 20 min during normal times. There's a bus shuttle running between Bend & Madras that is planning on 4 hour drive time at 2AM.

The state of OR is estimating 1M people in OR for the eclipse -- that's in addition to all the people who normally would just be in OR during August because it's a nice place to visit. At 4 people per car (hah!), that's an additional 250K cars on the roads, and Central OR is mostly 2 lane roads. They are definitely encouraging people to get where they want to be a few days in advance.

I was thinking about spending Sunday night with a friend in Bend, and then just driving to Redmond to get 45 seconds of totality, but now I'm really thinking of just skipping the whole thing.

Kind of amazing what tablets are capable of these days. I get a tremendous amount of work done on my iPad Pro, but really there's very little difference for general purpose computing between that and any other tablet.

The built in keyboard helps me a lot, but then being partially blind etc I need all the input help I can get :)
