Second happiest day in a boat owners life
May. 27th, 2021 09:48 pmAs I have been lamenting recently, our boat is dead. Valerie was lamenting this on one of the local Facebook groups, and somebody DM'd her to inquire about buying it. We were like, "really?" But apparently he was serious.
The trailer for this boat is pretty new, because the original trailer was pretty horrible and a few years ago I worried that the boat would end on the highway someday, being dropped by the rusty trailer. So we got a new one for $1200. So, I didn't really want to give away the boat for nearly free, with the trailer being fairly new.
So the guy comes by, and we chatted about the boat. He was thinking based on the Facebook post or something that the motor was in less bad shape, even though we explained that it had a crack in it and was letting water into the oil. I told him that because the trailer was new I wanted money for it. So he offered me $200 for just the boat and motor without the trailer. I was like "what are you going to do?" And he was like "I'll just dump it on my lawn." And so he did. We have $200, and he has the boat, and we have the trailer, which he "borrowed" in order to transport the boat to his house and then returned.
I don't know if I did the right thing by just taking the first offer of $200, or secretly if I could've gotten more. Maybe secretly the motor is worth something for scrap. But I don't really know how to go about extracting money from a dead motor, so if he does, more power to him.
So now we have a trailer that I guess we can put on craigslist for $800 or something. Or we can just keep it, in case we end up with a "new old boat" whose trailer is in similarly terrible shape as the original trailer for the dead boat.
