I do have the "use buttons to change volume" selected, because it seemed like that would be a useful feature. I didn't know it meant "only when I feel like it". According to Google, the control center is swipe diagonally from the upper right corner, which I knew about, but didn't know it was called control center. I haven't actually used that screen for anything except getting the flashlight!
