Is it really OK to kill a cat who is purring?

So, I believe my cat has taken in essentially zero calories for the past two days. Everyone was away for the two days before that, and there's evidence that a little dry food was eaten while we were gone. I don't know if she had the tuna water with the thyroid meds that the cat-sitter was to give. She refused it today and yesterday.

She's making little gagging sounds, and I wonder if it's because she doesn't have the energy for a full cough.

So, it seems like it should be time. I was actually a little worried she'd die on the cat-sitter, and traumatize the poor 15-yr-old for life.

But, we lit a fire in the fireplace tonight, which she has always enjoyed, and she climbed right into my lap and watched the fire and purred while I petted her.

It's so hard to know what's right.

I have the phone number of a vet who makes house-calls. So maybe at least we don't have to do it after an icky car ride in a sterile setting. I'll probably call them in a day or two.
