Biking for gardening
Aug. 2nd, 2020 06:52 pmMostly I've been bicycling 10-15 miles, which are deemed "not blog worthy". Today, however, I finally rode more than 20 miles, which is my threshold.
23.76 in 2:05 for an average of 11.3
The cool thing is my odometer now reads 369.6, and adding to the previously computed 1231, we get just about 1600 for the year.
We rode down to Taunton to go to a hardware store. Why did we go to the hardware store? To get an electric fence tester. Why do we have an electric fence? To keep the varmints out of our garden!
Ken has been growing winter squash and tomatoes, and the squash were going great guns; we got nine squashes so far, and some of them are pretty good-sized already. However, now we have six. Two nights ago somebody ate several leaves, and the two smallest squashes. We quickly deployed the deer camera, and also acquired an electric fence. Too bad we gave away the electric fence that we had owned when Valerie still had horses. But, it was years ago and it was taking up space, and it didn't seem like more horses were going to appear, so we gave it away. So now we have another one.
The camera saw one deer be thwarted by the deer netting that we had originally deployed around the garden. But, we saw no photo evidence of smaller creatures entering the garden. So we wanted to make sure that the fence was working. But, it turns out the only way to test an electric fence is to grab hold. Ouch. We didn't do it. Or, there is a special gadget that you can get. Thus, the bicycle trip to the hardware store. Turns out, the fence works. At least, so says the gadget.
Now we have deployed not only the deer camera and the electric fence, but the fancy surveillance camera we use for the black lives matter sign (nobody better steal it tonight, or we won't get video), so we can get pictures on all sides. We also added some more strands to the existing fence, so it covers more vertical space. Tonight will tell...
