Lady of the flies

A few days ago, I noticed a bunch of flies buzzing around. They all seemed to be clustering in my skylight. I got a chair and flyswatter and tried to take care of this, but it was very difficult to swat them in the corners of the skylight enclosure, and some of the enclosure was above my reach even standing on a chair, so I didn't kill very many.

Then I didn't have time to deal, and so I was like "whatever". It got cold, and they seemed to be quietly hanging out in the skylight. So today I got around to getting a ladder and the Dustbuster. But today, there are no flies in the skylight. Where did they go?
