A couple of weeks ago, after the garage floor was approved to walk on, we started putting things back into it. Unfortunately, we looked up, and discovered that there was some significant sagging of some of the rafters and some bowing out of the rear wall. We tried to do some kluge, but it was completely ineffective. So we called some contractors, and we ended up with a bid for $3600 which didn't really seem like it was going to solve the problem, and a bid for $19,000 which did seem like it was going to solve the problem.

We dithered for a while and decided to go for the larger sum. This guy is a complete professional, and he's getting a permit (which I think the other people didn't), which he will do next week, and I don't know when he's going to start, and it's going to be even more of a pain about removing all the stuff from the garage again. The canopy is not suitable for snow to fall on it, and it turns out to be not suitable for wind to blow either, because during a big storm it blew over despite being staked down, and everything under it got pretty darn wet. Most stuff was salvageable, and it's all back in the garage in boxes. We really want to be able to organize things, but I guess that will have to wait.
